Cross Country Team Will Meet Weak Dartmouth Varsity Today

By William C. Sigal

Dartmouth is not the Dartmouth of old, at least cross countrywise. Its squad, usually a Crimson nemesis, has lost all three of its meets this season. The varsity should have little trouble adding the Indian's scalp to its lengthy 17-meet skein when the two teams meet at 4 p.m. this afternoon on the Franklin Park course.

At 3:30 the Yardlings should encounter their toughest competition so far this season, from the Indian freshmen.

Actually, the Green's varsity is not totally inept. It has an outstanding runner in Captain Doug Brew, the heptagonal half-mile champion. Brew set a Dartmouth course record in beating varsity ace Pete Reider last year, but he has been hampered by an ankle injury this year. His second place finish against Brown last week, however, indicates that he will probably be at top strength for his annual duel with the Crimson's Reider.

Reider is ready, especially since he has finally shaken the effects of a cold which has bothered him much of the season.

That rivalry should provide the meet's one interest, for behind Brew, the Indians have nothing comparable to the varsity's strong nine-man depth.

Even though the Crimson is minus the services of number five man Mac Brown, out for the season with a knee injury, it will have number two man Dave Norris in top shape and a constantly improving Jim Schlaeppi backing up Reider. Rounding out the Crimson lineup are Ralph Perry, Bill Thompson, Bob Holmes, Bill Morris, John Read, Dick Wharton, and physically sub-par Captain Dave McLean.

The Dartmouth freshmen present a team similar to the Yardlings, with two good men, and a third not too far behind. But freshman captain Ed Martin, who will be shooting for the course record, and number two man Wes Hildreth, along with Dave Call, Gary Brooten, Pat Liles, Ed Marcy, and Dave Donaldson should prove too strong for the Indians.
