LIVE UPDATES: Pro-Palestine Protesters Begin Encampment in Harvard Yard
Four University officers will discuss the possibility of a substantial increase in college enrollment and its effects on the quality of the "Harvard Education" tonight at 8 p.m. in the Lamont Forum Room.
J. P. Elder, Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences; Seymour E. Harris '20, professor of Economics; George B. Kistiakowsky, Abbot and James Lawrence Professor of Chemistry; and John U. Monro '34, Director of the Financial Aid Office, will present their views in a forum moderated by President Pusey.
Sponsored by the Student Council Committee on Expansion, the forum is designed to place "emphasis on the question period," Jerry D. Goldberg '57, chairman of the committee, said yesterday. The Council will tape 20 minutes of this period to play for the Overseers' Visiting Committee on Friday.
The Council last night urged any students who are interested in the question of expansion, especially ones who have filled out the Council questionnaires, to come for participation in the discussion.
Monro is in favor of substantially increasing the College enrollment. Harris, on the other hand, opposes such an increase. In a statement to the CRIMSON last winter, he declared that "a substantial rise in enrollment would mean either a great deterioration in the quality of our education or tremendous expenditures for construction."
He also emphasized the danger that "a rise in tuition may result in a decline of quality if not accompanied by restrictions on entry."
