Nivola Appointed Head Of Designers' Workshop

Non-Concentrators to Have Opportunities For Design Work

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Constantine Nivola, who has been working on a part-time basis in the Design Workshop for the past two years, has been appointed Director of an expanded workshop program, Jose Luis Sert, Dean of the Graduate School of Design, announced last night.

There has been an active workshop program for the past few years, but only concentrators in the Architectural Sciences were able to use the facilities in the basement of Robinson Hall. Sert said that the new shop would have expanded openings in basic design and fundamental drawing for interested undergraduates as well as for concentrators.

Activity will begin in earnest this coming fall when Nivola assumes his full time duties. The post is not entirely a new one, but the director will be acting in an official capacity for the first time.

In Spirit of Visual Arts Report

Although this new, expanded workshop is not specifically mentioned in the Report of the Committee in Visual Arts, Sert emphasized that this type of thing was "definitely in the spirit of the Report." The workshop idea was suggested in terms of Harvard theatrical development, but Sert pointed out that this idea of development in the area of visual arts is definitely prevalent in the Committee's Report.

The basement of Robinson Hall, where the program is presently operating, is woefully inadequate for a truly strong development program, Sert claimed. He said that he was certain that everybody concerned with the program would like a separate building in which to develop the possibilities of this workshop plan of experimental design, and thought that the need should be filled in the near future.
