City Police to Tow Cars on Odd Sides

In an effort to facilitate plowing and passage on snow-plugged side streets, City Manager John J. Curry has ordered Cambridge police to enforce parking regulations on even-numbered sides of streets only.

As of last night the University police had not been notified of the plan. Chief Matthew J. Toohey said as yet no cooperation between Cambridge and University police had been planned. He added, though, that he felt Curry's action would be a boon to students.

Early last December, the Cambridge City Council defeated A1 Vellucci's proposal, backed by the Student Council, for alternate side night parking. City Council members argued that the measure would not effectively reduce the impediment to fire engines formed by the 120,000 cars illegally parked each night on Cambridge streets.
