Lacrosse Varsity Downs Penn, 7-3

The trouble with the Pennsylvania lacrosse team is that it has difficulty clearing the ball out of its own zone. The Crimson varsity took good advantage of this failing and, with a display of its best passing and team co-ordination of the season, crushed the Quakers Saturday by a score of 7 to 3.

It was due only to the supple efforts of Penn goalie Steve Anderson that the score was not of rout proportions. His masterful series of contortions managed to block most of the numerous Crimson shots hurled his way, especially during the second half when the ball rarely ventured out of Quaker territory.

With one and sometimes two Penn players off the field on penalties during a great deal of the game, the varsity had little trouble maintaining a constant threat against the visitor's goal.

Tim Draper sent the Crimson off to an early lead with a shot into the Quaker nets only 45 seconds after play began. Fred Felse of the Quakers evened the score three minutes later, but midway through the period, Mike Shaw, assisted by Jerry Cotter, tallied the first of his four goals to put the varsity ahead for the rest of the afternoon.

Shaw scored two more goals, within 24 seconds of each other, at the start of the second quarter. At half-time the Crimson led, 4 to 1.

The varsity's passing and control of the ball continued to be excellent during the second half. Shaw and Jim Gale, both with assists by Dub Mallonee, registered for the winners during the third period after a score by Penn co-captain Chuck Greenberg.

Jerry Pyle and Mallonee combined to produce perhaps the best play of the afternoon when, in the final period, Mallonee sent a high pass from behind the Quaker goal to Pyle, all in one motion, caught the ball and drove it low and hard past goalie Adamson.

The freshman squad absorbed its third defeat of the season against two victories at the hands of Tabor Academy Saturday by a score of 7 to 6.
