The varsity tennis team returned to its winning ways yesterday by defeating Dartmouth, 13 to 2, at the Soldiers Field Courts. The Crimson swept the ten singles contests in a very impressive show of court strength. It was the team's seventeenth victory.
Apparently stung by its recent shellacking by Princeton, the varsity dropped only one set in running through the singles contests. At first singles, Dale Junta topped highly regarded Dick Hoehn, 6-2, 6-3, and in the second position, Steve Gottlieb resumed his winning streak by defeating Bill Bullin, 6-3, 6-4.
Both Larry Sears and Ben Hecksher, at third and fourth single, turned in impressive 6-0, 6-2 wins, but in the fifth spot, Cal Place dropped one set in downing Jack McDonough, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. At sixth singles, Phil Mills won 6-4, 6-4.
At the bottom four positions, captain lan Gianetti, Al Goldman, Ned Weld and Jim Cameron all scored two set victories over their Dartmouth opponents to complete the Crimson's sweep of the afternoon's singles matches.
With the match safely sewed away, the varsity dropped two of the five doubles contests. In the first doubles match, Junta and Sears dropped a long, three setter, 7-5, 7-9, 6-3, to Hoehn and Bullin, and at fifth doubles Harvard's Pete Krogh and Cameron bowed to O.P. Jones and Steve Lampl, 7-5, 6-3, for the Crimson's second defeat.
The middle three teams all won handily. Heckscher and Place downed Chuck Ketterling and Tony Jenks, 6-3, 6-1; Mills and Charlie Edwards topped McDonough and Don Miller, 6-3, 6-4; and Weld and Laurie Pratt stopped Phil Langley and John Horan, 6-2, 6-4.
The varsity's next match will be against a weak Cornell squad, this Saturday.
