Varsity Harriers Seek Third Win Against Brown

By Joseph T. Ferrucci

The varsity's two previous encounters face its toughest test so far this season today when it seeks to extend its winning streak to three straight over a strong Brown harrier team in a dual meet at Franklin Park.

The varsity cross country team will have been easy affairs, as the harriers coasted to handy victories on the fine running of Captain Dyke Benjamin and sophomore Jed Fitzgerald. Brown, however, has already proven its strength in stiffer competition by placing second in a triangular meet with powerful Yale and Connecticut last week.

The Bruins, who finished only 14 points behind Yale in that meet with a 25-39 score, have several outstanding runners in sophomore Bob Lowe, who won the race, and Will Schwab and Vin McDonald, who finished third and fourth respectively.

For the varsity, the meet may resolve into a battle between the unbeaten combination of Benjamin and Fitzgerald and the Bruin speedster, Lowe. Fitzgerald, incidentally, previously defeated Lowe in 1C4A competition last year. After the front-running men, the depth of both the varsity and Brown drops off comparably, so that the performance of the Crimson's reserves will be a particularly critical factor in this meet.

The Crimson's key middle men will be senior Jim Schlaeppi, who ran a strong third against B.U. and Providence earlier this week, and senior Will Thompson, who finished fifth. Improving Gary Brooten, Dave Donaldson and Mac Brown must also help to lower the team totals.

In the freshman meet, the Yardlings will be looking for their second win of the season in a similar dual meet with the Brown freshmen. Yardling speedster Marc Mullin, who has placed first in both previous freshman meets, will be running against Bob Sturer, the top Brown finisher in their last meet.
