Yardlings Win Over Jumbos In First Game

The freshman football team handily defeated Tufts 25-0 in its first contest of the season last Saturday.

The Yardlings scored once in each quarter, with John Damis, Roy Williams, Dave Ward, and Gil Bamford carrying the ball for a touchdown apiece. The only successful extra point was a placement by Ward.

Ward and Bamford scored on line bucks, Damis carried the ball off tackle for a score, while Williams ran 12 yards to a touchdown.

Coach Henry Lamar praised the victory as a "team effort" by a "fine, hardworking group of boys." He said that the game was won largely because of the good defensive play by the team. Tufts gained only 127 yards on offense in the whole contest.

High Winds Prevent Passes

Offensively, the Crimson gained 14 first downs, but only three passes were completed because of high winds.

Lamar was pleased that, of the 54 boys who dressed for the game, all played. He was able to put in all his substitutes without worrying that they would make any major mistakes. Lamar felt that this large amount of substitution permitted him to get a good idea of how the players looked in a game.

Lamar could not, however, make a prediction on the team's chances against Boston College next week and the other schools on the schedule because of a lack of information on these yet untried opponents.
