Administration Studies Compromise on Rents

By Richard N. Levy

A system of strict uniform rents will not be instituted this year, the CRIMSON learned definitely yesterday.

Discussion of the matter of revising room rents has passed to the offices of the Deans of the College and of the Faculty, and a tentative decision has been reached to institute a compromise rent plan to take effect next year.

This plan, Administration sources indicated yesterday, would combine some aspects of the uniform rent plan with some of the present system. Extensive changes in the rent adjustment program are likely, since all in the University are apparently unhappy with this awkward measure.

It is likely that the compromise will reduce the present number of rent scales from their present total of 27 to a much smaller number, and arrange a less awkward rent adjustment program that will permit students in different income brackets to room together without embarrassment for anyone. Authority for this financial aid may be kept with the masters, or it may be shifted to the Financial Aid Office.

Freshman Deans Confer

There is also discussion of beginning this compromise program in the Freshman Dean's Office, to avoid what Dean Monro calls "Little Gold Coasts in the Yard." This difficulty has always existed, and when freshmen move into Wigglesworth again next year, the problem will be even greater, since Wigglesworth used to be the "Gold Coast" of the Yard.

Student opinion is reportedly playing a large part in the discussions of the matter, and the Dean's Office is keeping attuned to the ideas of those who will have to be paying this rent.
