Powerful Crimson Sextet Favored Over Princeton at Watson Tonight

By James W. B. benkard

So far this season, the varsity hockey team has had some unfortunate experiences with mid-week breathers, such as Dartmouth and Northeastern. Tonight the Crimson will face another one of these games against a weak Princeton sextet which has clinched last place in the Ivy League hockey race.

It is, however, almost inconceivable that the varsity could have any trouble with the Tigers. Princeton, with one of its worst teams in recent years, has a 1-5 record in Ivy competition and a 7-10 record overall. The varsity beat the Tigers earlier in the year, 7 to 2 down at the Baker Rink.

If Princeton had a goalie in the Batchelder-Jones-Frankenburg category, it might have a slim chance tonight, but as it is, Tiger coach Dick Vaughan has not yet even decided on a netminder for tonight. He will probably choose Bo Torrey, who has had some rough evenings this year.

Tiger captain Henry Rulon-Miller, Princeton's high scorer and chief threat, will center a first line of John McBride, and John Hill. The Tigers have been held by Ivy opponents to 10 goals in 6 games. Princeton will skate a second line of ex-defenseman Perry Hall along with Tony Pell and Pete Cook.

Tonight's game will make little difference in the NCAA selections, unless, of course, the Crimson loses or ties. Barring any more upets, it is a fairly sure bet that Clarkson and the varity will be the two choices.

Varsity captain Bob Cleary now leads the country in scoring, with 70 points in 26 games. Even if the Crimson goes to Minnesota, Cleary will have a hard time beating his brother Billy's pace-setting record of 89 points set three years ago.

Crimson coach Cooney Weiland will probably do a little experimenting tonight if the game seems safely in the barn. Mike Graney should see action both on the second line with Bob McVey and Bruce Gillie and at defense with Ed Owen. Dickie Reilly and Bill Collins will alternate on the third line with Bud Higgenbottom, Dave Vietze and Dick Fischer.

The rest of the team appears fairly well set. Cleary will again center his high-scoring line, with Terry O'Malley and Lyle Guttu at the wings, and Harry Pratt, who has allowed only 16 goals in the last nine games will open in the nets.
