Heavyweight Crew Wins Adams Cup; Lightweights Sweep Elis, Tigers

By Michael Churchill

The Crimson heavyweight varsity added a strong Pennsylvania crew and an outclassed Navy squad to the list of its victims on Saturday. Establishing itself firmly as the second ranking crew in the country, the varsity survived its toughest challenge of the season to win the Adams Cup for the third straight year.

In an extremely exciting finish of a long day of races on the Charles, the Crimson pulled ahead of Penn with three-quarters of a mile to go and then held off a closing Red and Blue sprint to win by half a length in 9.19.

In the regatta's other races, the Crimson Freshmen maintained their unbeaten record, but the J.V. crew came in third.

The varsity race began with Penn taking a lead of about a deck length right from the start. The Crimson kept up with the Red and Blue crew during the body of the race with both boats rowing at around a 32. Coming through the Harvard Bridge, the Crimson shell moved even with Penn and slowly eased into a lead.

Taking the stroke up to 35 with a little less than half a mile to go, the Crimson rowers were ahead by almost a length. The varsity held steady at a 35 as Penn sprinted higher and began to catch up while rowing at 37. Penn was still inching up slowly, as the Crimson increased its beat to 37 while the Quakers were flashing towards the finish at a fast 40, The Red and Blue, however, failed to gain any more, and the varsity crossed the line half a length ahead.

The J.V.'s loss was the first defeat for a Crimson crew this season. Rowing poorly in the rough water and catching several crabs towards the finish, the J.V.'s ended up 21/2 lengths behind Navy and a scarce two-tenths of a second after Penn.

Freshmen Win

In the first race of the regatta, the Crimson Freshmen picked up a 21/2 length victory over Navy, while Penn was five lengths to the rear.

The Pennsylvania boat, which was slightly ahead of the Crimson for the first mile, finished the race with only seven oarsmen. Having less than half a mile to go, the number six man blacked out, caught a crab, and was thrown out of the boat by his oar.

The race was rowed under very sloppy conditions with all the boats taking on a great deal of water during the race. The time was therefore quite slow, the winners crossing in 11:02.

The varsity boating was: Bow, N. Tilney (Capt.); 2, T. Swayze; 3, M. Zuromskis; 4, R. Zeeb; 5, F. Hunnewell; 6, T. Everett; 7, J. McClennen; Stroke, R. Lawrence; Coxswain, B. Peale.
