Lacrosse Team Wins, 8-6

By Paul S. Cowan

Nearly 500 intensely partisan Holy Cross fans saw the varsity lacrosse team defeat the Crusaders 8 to 6 yesterday afternoon. Playing in the Holy Cross football stadium, the Crimson came to life in the third period and easily overcame a 2-1 halftime deficit.

The crowd--among the largest to witness a varsity lacrosse game in several years--livened the contest with cries of "Fight fiercely, Harvard," and with shouts whenever it looked as if a fight might break out, or a Crimson player might be injured. In the fourth period, attackman Dave Bohn nearly came to blows with a Holy Cross defenseman.

Crusaders Score First

During the first period, the underdog Crusader team gave its supporters plenty to cheer about. While their defense was able to stop the varsity each time it brought the ball into Holy Cross territory, their attacks managed to score twice against Crimson goalies Chris Stone and Nat Howe.

In the middle of the second period, the varsity finally managed to crack the hardchecking Holy Cross defense, and score its only goal of the half. The score came when the Holy Cross goalie blocked a bounce shot by midfielder Dick Parks, but slipped and kicked the ball into the nets.

Crimson Offense Tallies

After the ten minute halftime break, the superior Crimson offense began to take advantage of some of the scoring opportunities Holy Cross had been handing them all afternoon. Bohn, attackman Jerry Pyle, and midfielder Charlie Devens each scored a goal in the first four minutes of the third period and put the varsity ahead to stay.

The rest of the period was played on fairly even terms. After Tadgh Sweeney sunk a long, tricky bounce shot from near the center of the field, Holy Cross tallied twice and narrowed the Crimson lead 5 to 4.

Fourth period goals by Bohn, attackman Jerry Pyle, and midfielder Tim Morgan kept the varsity out of danger for the rest of the game.
