Playing on courts that were, according to one member of the team, in "unbelievably" bad condition, the Varsity tennis team defeated Penn 7 1/2 to 1 1/2 in a contest in Philadelphia Saturday.

At first singles for the Crimson, Captain New Weld beat John Mangan, 6-4, 6-4, with a strong backcourt stroke, which improved as the match progressed. Victories by Bob Bowditch, Tim Gallwey, Bill Wood, and Laurie Pratt helped spark the Crimson win. Jim Cameron suffered the only defeat of the day.

Doubles teams of Weld-Bowditch and Langden Smith and Scott Custer also overcame their opponents. The Wood-Gallwey combination tied with the Quakers because of lack of time to finish their match.
