Reischauer Denies Ambassador Rumor

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

For a while yesterday it seemed as if the Kennedy Administration had stolen another Faculty member, but the story this time turned out to be mistaken.

The New York Times reported that Edwin O. Reischauer, professor of Japanese History, had been named Ambassador to Japan. Reischauer denied the report, however, commenting that "no such appointment had been made.

Even if the position were offered to me, I am not at all sure I would accept," he stated. Reischauer has several commitments at the University, serving as associate director of the Center for Far Eastern Studies and director of the Harvard-Yenching Institute, in addition to teaching courses in Far Eastern history.

Reischauer spent part of last week in Washington, conferring with members of the State Department about his recent trip to Korea.
