George B. Kistiakowsky, Abbott and James Lawrence Professor of Chemistry, has won an award from the American Chemical Society for "outstanding public service."
The former special assistant to President Eisenhower for science and technology will accept the Charles Lathrop Parsons Award in Washington, Dec. 9.
Kistiakowsky will receive, as part of the award, the privilege of choosing the recipient of a $2,000 scholarship for graduate study in chemistry or a related field.
Prior to his appointment as Presidential advisor, Kistiakowsky was head of the project which prepared the explosives necessary to detonate the first atomic bomb.
Former recipients of the award include James B. Conant '14, president emeritus of the University.
