‘The Architect of the Whole Plan’: Harvard Law Graduate Ken Chesebro’s Path to Jan. 6
The Masters commitee agreed last night to allow Radcliffe girls to attend language tables and other educational functions in the Houses. There will be no charge for the meals.
A spokesman for the Masters said that the additional cost to the College will be balanced by Harvard students attending similar functions in the Radcliffe dining halls. He stressed that the Masters hope to see more educational meals at the 'Cliffe.
Under the new plan, the privilege of "interhouse" will be granted only for educational events approved by the Master of the House. Requests for such action will probably come from the tutor or professor running the table.
"Once agreed upon," the spokesman said, "Radcliffe attendance at certain tables and various other functions will become a routine matter." He warned, however, that the Masters will have to curtail the program if too many girls want to attend the language and concentration tables.
The Masters stressed that their decision "In no way opens the door to promiscuous interhouse eating."
"It is only a device to make possible educational work," one Master said, "and girls attending tutorial in the Houses will be allowed to eat there only if the tutorial group eats together."
The Masters also said that it is "impossible for Radcliffe girls to eat lunch in the Houses." They said that, "if nothing else, crowding in the House dining rooms at desirable lunch hours makes any interhouse plan unfeasible."
The new plan will still permit more 'Cliffies to eat in the Houses than at any time in the past.
