Faculty Members Sign Advertisement

Over 350 residents of Belmont, including over a dozen members of the Harvard Faculty and Administration, a recent advertisement in the Belmont Citizen headed "A Declaration Fair Housing in Belmont."

The declaration, which supported equality of opportunity in housing "without regard to race, religion, or national origin," was sponsored by the Belmont Practices Committee, although not all of the persons signing the statement or contributing to the cost of the ad were members of the original Fair Practices committee.

Last night, Albert M. Sacks, professor of Law, who is a member of the committee and one of the signers of the declaration, explained that the advertisement was not placed as the result of any sense of crisis or emergency" but was signed as a community education measure to show that "in any given neighborhood of the town there would be support for the idea of housing without discrimination."

Listed in the advertisement, in addition to Sacks, were Derek C. Bok, professor of Law; Robert Dorfman, professor of Economics; Burton S. Dreben '49, associate professor of Philosophy; James , professor of Economics; B. Freidel, professor of History; L. Climp '50, Dean of Admissions Financial Aids; Alex Inkeies, Professor of Sociology; and Daniel J. Levinson, assistant professor of Psychology in Department of Psychiatry.

Also signing were Bayley F. Mason Assistant Manager of the Program Harvard Medicine; Talcott Parsons, professor of Sociology; Dr. Vincent P. Instructor in Neurology; Richard , professor of History; Dr. Claude , associate clinical professor of ; Fred L. Whipple, professor of Economy; Robert B. Woodward, Professor of Science; and Mrs. Leona , who is lecturer on Opththalmology.

Faculty members at M.I.T. listed in advertisement included Paul professor of Economics, and Jerrold , professor of Physics, both of whom have served as advisers to President Kennedy.
