Hockey Team Edges by Indians 4-3; Victory Comes on Controversial Goal

If you decided that it was too cold to walk down to Watson Rink last night to see the Harvard Dartmouth hockey game, you didn't miss much.

After spotting the Indians a 2-1 first period edge, the Crimson went out ahead in the second frame, and hung on in the third to win 4-3.

The winning goal came on a play which the Dartmouth fans, apparently correctly, judged offside. Jorge Gonsales cross ice pass to Koany Burnes seemed to cross the Dartmouth blue line after Hurnes did. Burnes broke away and converted the pass into the Crimson's fourth goal.

The victory Harvard's seventh straight gives the Crimson a 2-1 record in the Ivy League. The skaters now take a two week break to study for exams. Judging from last night's performance they can use the rest.

Harvard's sloppy pass work and liability to clear the puck out of its own end helped Dartmouth to its first period edge. At 10 04 Indian Doug Hayes picked up a loose puck in front of the Crimson net and beat goalie Brandy Sweltrer on a screened shot from 15 feet.

Less than three minutes later it was the Dartmouth defense's turn to leave the dies in front of its own net. Bill Lamarche picked it up and put it past goalie Brewster Oere at 12:46, as linemates Barry Treadwell and Baldy Smith received assists.

Indians Go Ahead

The Indians regained the lead while Crimson defenseman John Daly was sitting out a two-minute penalty. After stealing the puck at center ice, Charles Stuart hit the upper left corner of the Harvard net on a soft shot from far out.

As play temporarily speeded up at the start of the second period, Crimson captain Gene Kinasewich moved from defense to right wing on a shift that paid off immediately. He picked up the rebound of Mike Patterson's drive and tucked it home to tie the score at 0:37.

Jorge Gonzales put the Crimson ahead for good at 12:48 as he all but flew over Gere to knock in another loose puck that the Green defense failed to clear. John Stevens and Bob Clark assisted.

After Harvard opened up its 4-2 lead, Dartmouth drew within one goal at 19:35 of the last period as Stuart scored again, this time on a screened shot from the left point. But the Indians failed to control the puck before the final buzzer sounded.
