Iacavazzi, Harvard Target Saturday, Wins League's 'Back of Week' Award

Cosmo Iacavazzi, the all-Ivy fullback who will lead Princeton against Harvard Saturday, has been named the Ivy League Back of the Week for his iron-man job against Brown Saturday.

Ivy League statistics released yesterday also showed that Iacavazzi leads the league in rushing and in scoring. He is also third in total offense, and his teammate, tailback Don McKay, is second.

After McKay was injured in the first quarter of Princeton's 14-0 win over Brown, Iacavazzi took over Princeton's offense almost completely. He wound up carrying 33 times, tying an Ivy record, for 176 yards. He also scored both touchdowns.

It has been quite a year for Iacavazzi. The Tiger fullback has gained 441 yards in 74 carries in Ivy League play, for an average of almost six yards per carry. He is also averaging 110 yards per game.

Last year Iacavazzi tied for the national lead in scoring; this season he already has scored seven touchdowns, and leads the Ivies in scoring by nine points over Yale fullback and placekicker Chuck Mercein.

Harvard stopped Iacavazzi last year, but the Crimson should have its hands full Saturday.

To begin with, McKay will apparently be ready to play. Princeton coaches had feared that their tailback had suffered a shoulder separation in the first quarter of the Brown game; it turned out to be only a bruise.

McKay has a chronic leg injury and may not be at top speed Saturday, but he is expected to start. And his passing ability means that Harvard can't concentrate on stopping Iacavazzi.

Princeton also got some good news when it developed that Ernie Pascarella, a senior tackle who had nine stitches in his eye during a scrimmage before the Brown game, will be ready to face Harvard. This puts the Tigers' number one offensive and defensive platoons at full strength for the Harvard game.
