A spokesman for Massachusetts Political Action for Peace said yesterday that 25 college and graduate students, including 15 from Harvard, had joined a PAX-sponsored intern program with the Massachusetts Legislature.
Gerome Grossman, chairmain of PAX, explained that the program was designed to give students a chance to learn about "the workings of the American power structure from the inside," through lobbying, doing research on bills, and planning political strategy.
Noting that 5000 bills are submitted in Massachusetts every year, Grossman said that "Massachusetts legislators are woefully underpaid and can't possibly hire the necessary staff to deal with these bills."
Grossman said the program was an outgrowth of the political campaigns PAX has supported. He explained that four "PAX candidates" had been elected to the legislature and stated that he thought the program would "help them to be more effective legislators."
