Wrestlers Take Big-3 Title By Topping Yale, 19-12

The Harvard wrestling team ended its senson by defeating Yale 19-12 Saturday in New Haven for its first win over the Elis since 1957 and its first Big Three wrestling championship since 1927.

In his last dual meet for Harvard, Captain Ben Brooks, wrestling at 191 pounds, clinched the match by pinning Randy Fleming at 8:54. Crimson sophomore Howie Henjoyji, who had suffered through a succession of tough opponents all season, redcemed himself by pinning Bob Peffer of Yale at 8:28 of their 123-pound match.

In other matches, Tom Gilmore of Harvard edged Yale Captain Bob Foster 7-6 at 130. Gilmore, who scored five of his seven points with a quick reversal and near-fall in the second period, won the match with a third-period escape.

Eli sophomore Bob Jones manhandled Howie Durfee of Harvard 11-4 at 137. Sophomore Ed Franquemont of Harvard, wrestling 147, crushed Bob Malovany 6-0. Franquemont's 8-1-1 season record was Harvard's best.

Yale's Ken Haltenhoff, trailing Dave Worcester 3-2 in the third period of their 157-pound match, took Worcester down and scored a pair of predicaments for an 8-3 decision. Agonizing the scorekeepers, Chris Wickens of Harvard defeated Chris Wick of Yale 5-2 at 167 pounds.

Harvard's Jeff Grant lost a 10-3 decision to Tip Himes of Yale at 177, and Yale heavyweight Mike Lonergan, who had lost to Tack Chace of Harvard in three previous meetings, finally gained revenge with an 8-2 victory.

Harvard completed the year with a 5-5 overall record and a 4-2 mark in Ivy League competition.
