YD's To Aid In Local Race For Governor

To Help McCormack In Western Cambridge

By Stephen D. Lerner

The Harvard-Radcliffe Young Democrats will manage Edward J. McCormack Jr.'s campaign for the Massachusetts governorship in the western half of Cambridge.

Responsible for the 45,000 residents from Peabody Terrace west, the Young Dems plan to draw heavily on local Democratic ward workers for door-to-door campaigning.

Some 50 Young Dems will be involved in the campaign, attempting to swing Independent votes and securing party faithfuls. Using McCormack campaign funds, the Young Dems will open a store-front headquarters in the area, set up a communications system, and circulate posters.

Dennis R. Kanin '67, Young Dem in charge of the campaign, said that although Cambridge is heavily Democratic as a whole, "our area has more old yankee families than the other half."

There was apparently no opposition within the Young Dems to taking an active role in McCormack's campaign in spite of the fact that, according to Kanin, this is the first time the YD's have officially campaigned for any candidate.

Faith in Kids

According to Kanin, McCormack has long been interested in using the Young Dem organization in Democratic campaigns. "He is convinced that we can bring new initiative and enthusiasm to the campaign," Kanin said. "He has faith in kids," Kanin added.

Kanin said that some of the canvassing would be done by pairs of Harvard and Radcliffe students "so that women will not feel uncomfortable about talking with us when the man is out of the house."

The Young Dems are trying to organize a rally on Cambridge Common where McCormack will speak and gather support. Plans have also been made to rent sound trucks to publicize the event.
