Holy Cross Gridders Rout Luckless Yardlings, 27-6

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

"IT was just one of those days when nothing seems to go your way," lamented freshman football coach Henry N. Lamar following his squad's 27-6 loss to the Holy Cross freshman eleven.

The Crusaders, capitalizing on Harvard errors and several timely breaks, proved too strong for the Harvard squad, as they amassed a 21-0 halftime lead.

Disaster struck early for the Crimson, when, in the opening minutes of play, the Holy Cross defense recovered a fumble in Harvard territory. The Crusades wasted no time in posting their first score, as quarterback Mark Mowatt scampered to paydirt from 35 yards out.

They added a second score late in the first quarter, when safety Wally Quigg took a Harvard punt at his own 30-yard line, picked up several key blocks, and raced 70 yards down the sideline for the TD.

Drive Crushed

The Harvard offense came to life late in the first quarter, moving the ball inside the Holy Cross 30-yard line before a Crusader interception ended the drive. The quarter closed with the Yardlings trailing 14-0.

Harvard's best scoring opportunity of the half came early in the second quarter. Through several good ground gains by halfback Rick Szaro, the Crimson moved the ball to the Holy Cross 5. But the drive ended here, as the Holy Cross defense held firm.

After the ball changed hands several times, the Crusaders scored again. End Jim McClowry grabbed a deflected pass and fought his way into the end zone.

Lone Score

Harvard's only score came early in the third period. After taking a punt on their own 43. Yardling fullback Tom Miller carried the ball eight yards to the Holy-Cross 49. From there, Szaro took a handoff from quarterback Larry Centulo and followed good blocking 49 yards for a Crimson score.

The Yardlings attempted a two-point conversion, but their pass fell short, and the score remained 21-6 with 9:31 left to play in the third quarter.

With three minutes left in the game, Holy Cross added their final score, this time on a 16-yard pass to McClowry. The point attempt was blocked, leaving the final score Holy Cross 27, Harvard 6.
