Reischauer Calls Asia Fund Valid

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Edwin O. Reischauer, University Professor, yesterday affirmed his continued support for the Asia Foundation, a private American philanthropic organization of which he is a trustee, after a disclosure that it had indirectly accepted money from the Central Intelligence Agency.

In a statement released earlier this week, the trustees admitted having received contributions from other foundations and trusts recently exposed as channelers of CIA funds. The foundation's press spokesman said that it would no longer accept hidden Federal subsidies.

The Asia Foundation supports Asian schools, libraries, and other educational projects. Reischauer, former U.S. Ambassador to Japan, said that the foundation is doing an "excellent job, better than anyone else, in promoting healthy intellectual relations between the U.S. and Asia."
