Unbeaten Freshmen Face Princeton Soccer Eleven

The 7-0 record of Harvard's freshman soccer team goes on the line today at Princeton.

The Princeton team is a big unknown. Its record is a strong 4-1 but it hasn't played since a loss October 26 and could be cold after that lay-off. The Tiger freshmen have been rough, though, in recent years. The Yardling booters haven't taken a game at Princeton since 1963.

The Crimson booters will be trying to overcome their lack of practice this week. Crimson coach Dana Getchell said "injuries and hour exams have taken a terrific toll."

Many players will be playing together for the first time since last week's 7-1 rout of Penn. "Since the ball club wasn't together this week, all I could do was run them some," said Getchell. "I would have been crazy to try to introduce any new strategy to them," he added.

Doubtful starters today include right wing Russ Bell, right inside Greg Horning, and left inside Phil Kydes. Kydes got spiked on the foot in last week's game in which he also scored twice. If Bell is unable to play, Getchell hopes to be able to replace him with Jimmy Carrow, although, Carrow turned an ankle this week.

The Crimson has not been weakened everywhere. The team has combined an aggressive offense with a sharp defense and two key players, high-scoring Charlie Thomas and goalie Larry Anderson, should be in good shape for today's game.

Thomas scored twice against Penn, upping his season total to 16. He stands a good chance of overtaking last year's high-scorer Solomon Gomez, who tallied twenty times during the season.

Something to watch for today is the effect of Princeton's red clay field on the Harvard players. "When you're not used to it, running on that stuff can be very tiring," said Getchell.

Harvard's unbeaten record this year is part of a longer unbeaten streak stretching over three years. The Crimson will be trying to add an 18th win to that string today.
