Fencers Outduel Impotent SMTI By 20-7 Margin

An awesome sabre team led Harvard's varsity fencing team to an overwhelming 20-7 victory over a weak Southeastern Massachusetts Technological Institute team yesterday in the IAB.

Larry Cetrulo and Ron Winfield each won two bouts before being lifted by Coach Edo Marion in the third bout. The epee team too was dominant, but the foil squad, led by sophomore Tom Keller, had a rocky day.

Nervous

Keller, the much heralded swordsman who was undefeated as a freshman, lost one of his bouts and came close to dropping another. Keller seemed nervous in his first varsity appearance and lost his first match 5-1. He nearly dropped the second but rallied to win 5-4. He seemed tight and lacked the easy grace which carried him last year.

Except for Keller, however, the team looked good and Coach Marion says he looks forward to another easy victory over Holy Cross here on Saturday. Last year's team, which beat S.M.T.I. 17-10, swept to a 24-3 win over the Cross.

Easy Winners

Cetrulo, the one time quarterback of the freshman football team, has lost none of his stuff. He quickly jumped into the lead with both opponents and overpowered them for 5-1 and 5-1 victories. Winfield was not far behind winning 5-1 and 5-2.

The first really big meet of the season is on December 14 against highly-rated City College of New York. The C.C.N.Y. meet will be a test of the Crimson's strength before the crucial matches with Columbia and New York University next month. Last year the fencers beat both S.M.T.I. and Holy Cross only to go on to lose to C.C.N.Y. and have one of the worst seasons in Harvard history.
