Cornell Defeats Lights at Henley

On the eve of the Harvard heavyweight crew's biggest test, the Harvard light-weights showed them in England how not to do it.

The heavyweights are favored to win the Olympic trial meet in Long Beach, Calif, running today through Sunday.

Meanwhile, the lights lost of Cornell Wednesday in the first round of the Henley Regatta on the Thames River. It was the third meeting of the year between the two boats: Harvard won at the Eastern Sprints, but the Big Red knocked them off at the American Henley in Philadelphia. The loss Wednesday eliminated Harvard from the Henley after being in it for only 7 minutes and 24 seconds.

The lights' race lasted a minute longer than usual, because of a strong current against the crews. Harvard led at the start as expected, but Cornell caught up at the quarter mile point of the one-mile and 550 yard race. After that, Cornell pulled away.

While the lights had the misfortune of drawing Cornell in the first round of their meet, the heavies--in their quest for the big prize--have it easy today as Vesper and Penn slug it out in the first heat. Harvard meets no-contest boats in the other heat.

On Saturday, the losers battle for the third and fourth spots in Sunday's final, which figures to include Harvard, Penn, Vesper, and some other boat. Harvard is the experts' favorite to win the trip to Mexico City.
