Engineers Down Swordsmen, 16-11

By Martin R. Garay

About 15 years ago, a Harvard fencing team lost to a team from M. I. T. Yesterday, it happened again, as the Crimson-overconfident to begin with-were humbled by the Beavers. 16-11.

"Actually, I'm very glad it happened for M. I. T." Harvard coach Edo Marion said. "It gets boring winning year after year." he said.

The Engineers showed good strength with every weapon, winning by one bout in sabre and epee, while posting a two-bout advantage in the foil.

Larry Cetrulo won his three matches easily, almost arrogantly. Rich Tolbert, lacking any emotion, could not, however, counter the thrusts made by his aroused Beaver opponent. Tolbert had only one victory.

Scott Beekett and his replacement, Emil Godfrey, were unable to win at the number three sabre.

Irvings a Winner

Mark Irvings easily defeated his opponents and won three matches at epee. "He has shown a lot of maturity in his last two matches, and tonight he was brilliant," coach Marion said of Irvings last night.

Of the six bouts left in the epee, only one was a Crimson victory, managed by Paul Viita.

The Harvard freshman flipped the score, and bagged their inexperienced Beaver opponents. 16-11.
