Woman is Nominated To Board of Overseers

By Carol R. Sternhell

For the first time in Harvard history, a woman-Helen H. Gilbert '36, chairman of Radcliffe's Board of Trustees-has been nominated for Harvard's Board of Overseers, the senior of the University's two governing boards.

Along with Mrs. Gilbert, nine men-have been nominated for five available places on the 32-member board.

All holders of Harvard degrees-approximately 100,000-are eligible to vote for the Overseers by mail. Results will be announced on Commencement Day, June 11.

Five Overseers are elected each year to serve a six-year term. The Board of Overseers, which also includes the President and Treasurer of the University, meets seven times a year to pass on actions taken by the Corporation, Harvard's other governing board.

Mrs. Gilbert said last night that her nomination reflected the changing relationship between Harvard and Radcliffe, as seen in the merger of the two institutions proposed for this year and the beginning of coed living this week.

"I think that in the past Harvard was seen as a man's university," she said, "The explanation for my nomination now comes with the closer relationship with Radcliffe-it has nothing to do with mo personally."

Nominations were made by a committee of the Associated Harvard Alumni, headed by Walter. N. Rothschild Jr. '42, a retired New York City department store executive. The committee's choices are based on suggestions of University officials, Harvard Clubs and classes, and individual graduates.

Nominations by petitions signed by at least 200 alumni are possible, but none have been received so far this year. The deadline for petition nominations is March 9.

Last year, there were two nominations by petition-Norman K. Mailer '43 and Henry Norr '68. Both were defeated.

The nine men nominated include: John E. Lawrence '31, a partner in the Boston firm of James, Lawrence and Co.; Taggart Whipple '34, a partner in the New York law firm of Davis, Polk and Wardwell; Louis M. Cabot '43, chairman of the Cabot Corporation;

Wade H. McCree Jr., JD '44, of Detroit, a judge at the U. S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit; Louis H. Pollack '44, Dean of the Yale Law School; DonaldKennedy 52, professor and chairman of the Department of Biological Sciences at Stanford University; John Jay Iselin 56, vice-president of Harper and Row;

Terry F. Lenzer 61, director of the Office of Legal Services of the Office of Economic Opportunity in Washington; and Evan Davis '66, a clerk in the U. S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.

In addition to approving actions taken by the Corporation-a seven-member self-perpetuating group including President Pusey and the Fellows-the Overseers chair visiting committees which review all departments of the University.
