Crimson Nine Meets B.U. In Greater Boston Game

By Robert W. Gerlach

Before the season began, coaches in the Greater Boston League picked the Crimson baseball team to win the League title, and now their predictions are becoming self-fulfilling prophecies.

For the second game in a row, Harvard will not face the opposition's top pitcher because the GBL challenger does not want to "waste" its best hurler in a losing cause.

Tuesday the Crimson beat Brandeis sophomore Bill Hill while the Judge's leading pitcher warmed up on the sidelines for a weekend game with Northcastern. At 3 p.m. on Soldiers Field the Crimson will face B.U. freshman southpaw Billy Babcock or right-hander Peter Yetten. Terrier coach Bob Crocker is saying Rodger Ragowski for a weekend game with Tufts.

"You have to save your best hope for a good chance rather than waste him against Harvard," Crocker said.

Harvard also will go with a reserve strategy against B.U. saying its strengths for a weekend doubleheader with Dartmouth. Coach Loyal Park is planning on starting lefthander Roz Brayton, but Park will remove the sophomore pitcher early in the game before he tires. Relief pitchers John Todd and Barry Malinoski will also see action today.

Babcock is a challenging pitcher for batters because he has a natural outshoot on pitches to a right-hander. Yetten relies on speed rather than breaking pitches.

B.U. is an extremely young team, starting seven players without varsity experience. The Terriers are coming off their best performance of the year, an 8-4 victory over B.C.
