Tennis Team Faces Army Today

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The tennis team showed that it has not lost any momentum yesterday, beating Cornell. 8-1, at the Soldiers' Field courts. The Crimson faces another EITA second division team, Army, today at 3 p.m.

In the only close contest of the match, Cornell's Dirk Dugan came from behind to beat Bill Washauer at first singles, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4. Dugan, now undefeated in five EITA matches, has come of age since his loss to Washauer last year, and if he can get by Princeton's Bill Colson, will be the League's top player this year.

Washauer was playing his best tennis of the season and nearly put the match away in the second set. Up 4-2 in the tie-breaker, he had the serve for the last three points.

Dugan won all three points, broke Washauer's serve early in the next set and then only needed one service break to complete the come from behind victory.

"I was extremely pleased with Washauer today." coach Jack Barnaby said. "Dugan has been beating everybody, and Bill had to be playing great tennis to have come as close as he did."

In a challenge match on Thursday, Washauer beat Joe Cavanagh, who has been tearing up the League at number two, in straight sets. "Bill wasn't playing well at all up until the Brown match, but now I'm really glad I stuck with him." Barnaby said.

The rest of the singles were won in straight sets. Randy Barnett continued to be impressive at number three, winning, 6-0, 6-3, and Peter Briggs demonstrated the Crimson's depth with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at number six.

New Duos

The new doubles teams were very impressive in their second outing. Washauer and Cavanagh beat Dugan and Leo Duncan at first doubles, 6-3, 6-2. Briggs and Tom Loring had no trouble at number two, winning. 6-2, 6-2. Briggs and Bill Brock won at third doubles, 6-4, 6-1.

Cavanagh was happy with his new partner. "Bill has a stronger serve than Dave Fish, which is especially important in doubles. Dave and I know each other better, of course, and in shots down the middle Bill and I are still hesitating," Cavanagh said.

Barnaby felt that the other two teams are working out well, although they have yet to be tested in a close match.

Favorite Today

Harvard is a solid favorite in today's match against Army. The West Pointers are 3-4 on the season. They lost to Princeton. 9-0. and to Penn, 7-2. "Army should be better than Cornell," Barnaby said. "They aren't great at the top, but have good depth,"

Jack Stevenson is captain and plays first singles. The most effective Cadets so far this season have been Ray Federici and Dick Fate at second and third singles.
