Radcliffe Bows to Princeton After Net Loss at Barnard

The Radcliffe tennis team lost an unofficial match to Barnard Friday, 3-2, and then moved to Princeton Saturday where they were demolished, 9-0.

The match at Columbia was declared unofficial because the number one, two, and three singles players and number one doubles team from Radcliffe arrived late and did not play. Barnard, using its best players against Radcliffe replacements, won the match, 3-2.

"It was a great effort by my girls." Perla Hewes, Radcliffe tennis coach, said. "With a rag tag team we only lost 3-2. I think we put up a magnificent effort."

The Princeton match was over before it started. Using its best players, four of whom are nationally ranked, the Tigers swept every match in straight sets.

"I'd venture to say they (Princeton) are the best in the country," Hewes said. "We hoped they would not put their best against us. But they did, and they really polished us."

Radcliffe will play Pine Manor Thursday at 4 p.m. at home. Hewes said Pine Manor is "a very strong team and it will be a struggle to improve on our 1-1 record."
