Stephen S.J. Hall, vice president for administration and chairman of the committee searching for a replacement for Harvard Police Chief Robert Tonis, said this week that he will announce the name of the new chief by November 1.
The eight-member search committee has considered more than 250 applicants for the post since last spring, Hall said, and now has a final pool of five.
Hall said the committee will make a final choice by Monday and present the name to the Corporation for the usually routine approve.
"The decision is a hair away," he said.
Hall said the "new man" will be on the job by January 1. "I can't say enough about the committee. There absolutely won't be any disagreement between the president and the committee," he said.
