Whitlock Recommends Woman To Kirkland Senior Tutorship

By Nancy Sinsabaugh

Elizabeth A. Gray, teaching fellow and newly appointed assistant professor of Celtic Languages and Literatures, has been recommended to be the next Allston Burr Senior Tutor at Kirkland House.

If the Corporation approves the recommendation at its next meeting, Gray will become the fourth woman senior tutor in the University, the second at a River House. Laura M. Gordon was appointed Allston Burr Senior Tutor of Eliot House last year, becoming the first female senior tutor at a Harvard House.

Reardon's Replacement

Gray will replace John P. Reardon, Jr. '60, director of admissions in Harvard College. Reardon said yesterday he is leaving the post because his duties in admissions do not leave him the time a senior tutor needs to devote to students.

Dean Whitlock, who will recommend Gray for the senior tutorship, said yesterday she was chosen because her teaching experience proves she can work well with students.

Brilliant

Evon Z. Vogt, professor of Social Anthropology, whom the Corporation appointed master of Kirkland House last month, said yesterday she was one of the people he recommended to Whitlock for the post because "she is a very brilliant person who is eager to be active in student and House affairs."

Stephen H. Dart'75, chairman of the Kirkland House Committee, said yesterday that Vogt attempted to elicit suggestions for the new senior tutor from students.

Dart said the House committee has met with Gray, and "the response has been quite positive."
