City Candidates Seek Student Vote

By Steve Schorr

Members of the Cambridge Convention '75, a coalition of liberal reform groups, seeking support for the November 4 elections, asked students at a meeting held last night at Phillips Brooks House to register to vote and to back the Convention's platform.

Addressing an audience of about 15 students, John Brode, one of the candidates said that the primary goal of the group is to obtain a majority on the nine-member Cambridge City Council. This will allow the group to put through its programs.

The Convention's platform is based on continuing support for rent control, keeping property taxes from rising, and preserving existing neighborhoods--keeping residential areas residential--through development control.

David Clem, an MIT graduate student running for city council, said at last night's meeting that "the candidates [on the Convention slate] are aligned together" on all the platform issues.

The speakers included eight candidates for the city council and seven for the school committee. They were all endorsed by the Convention last May.

Although disappointed by the small student turnout, the candidates said they need student support in order to win the election.
