The Harvard golf team finished sixth out of a field of 22 teams this weekend in the Eastern Intercollegiate Golf Association Championships at the Yale Golf Club in New Haven.

The Crimson shot 644 for the tour nament. 21 strokes behind champion temple, which shot a 623 Yale with 641 , and Princeton with 636, also placed ahead of Harvard.

Top player for the Crimson was Jon Ellis, who shot a 78 and 79 for the two days. Alex Vik came in with an 80-78. Peter Z. Zurkow shot an 82-80. Tom Yellin an 83-83 and Steve McConnell an 84-82.

"We played as poorly as we can with the exception of Jon [Ellis]." co-captain Yellin said, "But that we played poorly and still finished sixth was encouraging, although it was also discouraging."

Conditions for the first day were perfect, but the Crimson linksmen could only manage a 324 total. On the second day, under conditions which Yellin described as "about the worst you'll ever see." Harvard actually shot four shots better than the previous day, turning in a 320. The better second day showing moved Harvard from the thirteenth spot the first day to its eventual sixth place finish.

The individual highlight of the tournament for Harvard came when Tom Yellin, hitting into the wind and rain on the second day, drove a three-wood 215 yards into the hole for an eagle two on the par four 440-yard sixth hole.

As a result of their showing in this tournament and the Ivy League tournament earlier this season, both Vik and Yellin were named to the All-Ivy golf team.

Harvard's next big tournament comes this week at Dartmouth, where the Crimson will be vying for two spots out of to contenders in the Eastern District 1 tournament for the right to go to the NCAA championships UMass. Harvard Dartmouth and Yale are the favorites in that one.
