The Radcliffe lightweight crew, after defeating all the lightweight crews in the area this season, placed fourth in a field of eight heavyweight crews at the Worcester Invitational regatta last Saturday.

Connecticut College swept the race finishing the 1000 meter course with the help of a strong tailwind in three minutes and 12 seconds.

N.H. Edges Out 'Cliffe

Of the six boats that qualified for the finals, four stayed together to the finish. Radcliffe rowed across the finish line fourth in 3 minutes and 19 seconds. Dartmouth came in second and the University of New Hampshire third, only a half length ahead of the Crimson boat.

The junior varsity Radcliffe boat won its heat and brought home a trophy for their 3-minutes and 37 second time. They defeated the junior varsity heavyweight crews of Dartmouth and Connecticut College.

Coxswain Barbara Pearce said she was happy with the race. "It was a really good race," she said. "It got us psyched for the sprints next weekend. We really didn't care that much if we won. We wanted to have a good race before next weekend."

Gets Cadence Control

During the race two weeks ago the cadence soared out of control to 42 strokes per minute. Pearce said, "We wanted to get our stroke down and we did. We had the cadence at a 35, and we rowed really well at it."

On Wednesday the lights will race another 1000-meter course at Northfield Mt. Herman.

After that Coach Peter Huntsman will give his crew an easier time at practices to prepare them for the sprints at Lake Besick next Saturday. The only other lightweight eights racing in the sprints will be Boston University and Princeton, both of which the 'Cliffe has already beaten, and Wellesley, which succeeded only recently in getting together an eight.
