Racquetwomen Tip Colby, Capture Five of Six Singles

By Bill Scheft

The Radcliffe tennis team continued on its undefeated trail yesterday, depsite some rocky terrain in the form of the Colby College squad. When it was all over, the team had squeaked out its second win of the season, 5-4.

Terry Clarke's number six singles match provided the scant margin of victory for the women in white. Clarke gutted out the first set by a tough 7-5 decision, then continued what proved to be a clutch performance with a 6-3 win in the second set.

The recquetwomen hardly came out squeaking in the opening singles matches, as they took four out of the top five spots with little difficulty.

Return to Win

Sally Roberts and Rita Funaro, who missed the first match, found their way to the University Health Services and once pronounced physically fit, went on to surgically remove their opponents in straight sets. Roberts took her number one match 6-1, 6-1, while Funaro breezed at number two, 6-2, 6-2.

Captain Denise Thal and freshman Katy Ditzler, stroking at number three and five respectively, were similarly ruthless in straight-setting their Colby rivals. Thal bounced back from Saturday's loss with a pair of 6-2 triumphs and Ditzler won her first set 6-2 and then snagged the squad's first "bagel" of the season with a 6-0 win in the finale.

Back problems continued to haunt Diana Olney. With her number four match tied after two sets she had to default, giving Colby their only singles win of the afternoon.

In the Bag

With the match in the bag Coach Corey Winn opted to take a look at some of his new talent in the doubles matches, and "give those girls some needed varsity experience."

Colby responded to Wynn's gesture by sweeping the doubles matches. Although the first and third matches were won in straight sets, it was Heartbreak City at number two for Anne Koufman and freshman Patty Wenn, as the tandem lost tiebreakers in the first and third sets and the match 6-7, 6-2, 6-7.
