Radcliffe Teams Sweep Two Contests

'Cliffe Tennis Nips Wellesley, Juggernaut Stays Undefeated

By Bill Scheft

The Radcliffe tennis team travelled down the Mass Turnpike yesterday for its third match of the season, but it was the opponent, Wellesley College, that paid the toll, as the racquetwomen won 4-3 to remain undefeated.

Academia, rather than Wellesley, was the Crimson's biggest adversary, as various scheduling conflicts took several top players out of the picture.

Denise Thal's three-setter decided the match in favor of Radcliffe. With the team score knotted at 3-3 and Thal's number two match tied at one set apiece, the captain captured the crucial win with a 6-3 third-set victory.

Singles continued to be the strong suit for the women in white, who resemble Connie Hawkins in their one-on-one expertise. Number one Sally Roberts swept 6-4, 6-2, as expected, but unexpected were the awesome singles debuts of freshmen Beth Craig and Patty We n at numbers three and four, respectively. Both yardlings won decisively: Craig 6-2, 6-1 and Wenn by identical scores of 6-2.

Janet Clark, at number five, was the only loser in singles, as she fell victim to a 5-4 tiebreaker in the second set and lost her match 6-2.

'Two's Company'

In the doubles matches it was the same old story--"One's company, two's a crowd"--as the squad went through its second match in a row without a doubles victory. Liz Livingston and jAbbie Greenbaumme lost 6-4, 6-2, and newcomers Linda Marr and Cathy Coakley also went by the baseline 6-0, 6-4.

Radcliffe puts its clean slate on the line against a tough Williams squad on Saturday.
