Vellucci Speaks

Harvard is too busy looking out for itself to support community activities in Cambridge, Alfred J. Vellucci, mayor of Cambridge, said last night in an informal discussion in Thayer Hall.

Vellucci told 15 freshmen that Harvard is unwilling to offer University facilities or seek volunteers to help in community projects.

"All of Harvard sits in tax-free buildings while the community carries the financial burden," he said. "The people should get something back in return."

Vellucci suggested that the University organize a group of students to lead recreational programs in Cambridge.

"I don't think Harvard kids should be all cooped up in one corner by themselves. They are probably willing to help if the administration would make an effort to organize the program," he said.
