The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences is presently trying to determine why its tremendously bolstered recruiting efforts and large black applicant pool left next year's class with only two more blacks than this year's contingent.
The graduate school, which had a 76 per cent increase in black applicants this year, participated in two separate minority recruiting efforts, tapping the resources of both colleges and other graduate school admissions offices.
This year's results challenge both the effectiveness of these programs and the attitude of the departments toward minority students.
