Acting Master

Robert J. Kiely, master of Adams House, will take a sabbatical next year, and an acting master will probably be appointed next month, President Bok said yesterday.

Kiely, who said last week he plans to live in Cambridge, England, while he writes and does research, said his suggestion for the acting master has not been approved and declined to give the name until the appointment is made official.

The Adams House Committee was not informed of Kiely's sabbatical, a committee member who asked to remain anonymous said last week.

The committee "did not know there was going to be an acting master and was not asked to participate in the selection process. People may be mad about it," he added.

Acting House masters are often recruited by the master of the House in question, Dean Whitlock said last week. House committees are not consulted because the selection of acting masters "is such a personal thing," he added.
