WASHINGTON--Members of a joint House-Senate energy conference committee agreed yesterday to back President Carter's goal of reducing U.S. reliance on foreign oil imports.

Conference leaders said they face vast differences in their proposals to meet that goal, however. They added that they will probably have to compromise on major issues.

The panel considered several proposals before the House and Senate regarding energy conservation.

The action follows Carter's prediction that Congress will eventually enact the bulk of his energy program.
