Top seed Martina Navratilova easily advanced to the second round of the Virginia Slims Tournament last night as she defeated Mima Jausovec, 6-1, 6-2.

Navratilova, displaying a strong serve and an aggressive net game, disposed of her opponent in less than an hour in the first round match. Both players later complained publicly about an umpire's call on Navratilova's last serve of the match.

Favorites

Chris Evert and Billie Jean King, other tournament favorites, have already reached the second round.

Earlier in the day, Rosemary Casals withstood a strong effort by 18-year-old Anne Smith of Dallas, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, to advance to the quarterfinals. Marita Redondo also moved into the quarterfinals as she downed Renata Tomanova, 6-2, 6-0.

In other first-round matches, Yvonne Vermaak defeated Kate Latham, 6-1, 6-3 and Florenza Mihai beat Katja Ebbinghaus, 6-3, 0-6. 6-4.

Renee Falls

Renee Richards and Barbie Potter fell to Janet Newberry and Kristien Shaw, 6-3, 6-4, in doubles action. Evonne Goolagong and Betty Stove topped Latham and Helena Anliot, 6-1, 6-4.

The Boston Red Sox won their fourth exhibition game yesterday, as they pounded the Montreal Expos, 8-3. Jerry Remy and Butch Hobson homered for the Sox, and Bill Lee picked up the win.
