House Committee Votes Against Winthrop Dining Hall Boycott

Winthrop House Committee officers voted yesterday afternoon to call off the proposed boycott of last night's dinner after receiving a compromise proposal from the Department of Food Services.

Frank J. Weissbecker, director of Food Services, yesterday proposed assigning Robert B. Davis, supervisor of the Winthrop Dining Hall, to Winthrop two days a week.

The House Committee voted Monday night to boycott the dinner to protest Davis's reassignment as substitute supervisor for all dining halls.

"The boycott was cancelled temporarily," Clayton R. Squire '80, vice president of the House Committee, said yesterday.

"Weissbecker's proposal is a step in the right direction, but it's not acceptable," Squire said, adding that House Committee members will meet today with Weissbecker to discuss other proposals.

A decision to boycott a meal later this week will be made after tomorrow's meeting with Weissbecker, Squire said. "We can mobilize the whole House within 12 hours," he added.

"Two days is better than nothing, but I'd still like to be here all the time," Davis said.

"I'm just a little spoke in a big wheel. I'll do what I'm told," he added.

Zeroing In

James A. Davis, master of Winthrop House, said yesterday he supports the House Committee's decision. "I'm pleased Food Services has shown some willingness to compromise," Davis added.
