STANFORD, Calif.--The Stanford University faculty senate has unofficially approved a Western culture requirement and modification of distribution requirements.
Under the new proposal, which will first apply to freshmen next fall, all students will have to take three sequential courses in Western civilization. There are seven sets of three courses that students can take to meet the requirement.
All students will also have to take one course each in the following seven areas: literature and fine arts; philosophical, social and religious thought; human development, behavior and language; social processes and institutions; mathematical sciences; natural sciences; technology and applied sciences. Stanford also has a writing requirement that will be unchanged.
