PHILADELPHIA--The University of Pennsylvania cut energy consumption by 5.5 per cent and saved $11,000 during the first month of an energy-saving contest among the university's dormitories.

The university gave $300 for first prize, $200 for second prize and $100 for third prize to the dormitories that cut their energy consumption the most over the levels of November 1979.

"We saved a hell of a lot, and I'm hoping we can do even better next month," Andrew Friedland, coordinator of the project, said after the awards were announced.
