Racquetwomen Best Wellesley; Harrison and Stimpson Shine

By Janie Smith

The women's squash team took the bus to Wellesley yesterday. Unlike its male weekend counterparts, the Crimson squad returned after dazzling a hapless Wellesley squad with a 7-0 win.

Looking ahead to this Saturday's Yale challenge, senior captain Ellie Cunningham said the racquetwomen played in a relaxed manner so that they could retune their competitive match skills.

Rolling

Led by Jackie Corrigan in the number-one slot, every member of the Crimson squad convincingly dispatched of her opponent--only one match went beyond the minimal three games.

Corrigan--after a lethargic opening marred by a lack of ball control--dropped her first game to Ann Harian, 13-15. She then proceeded to defeat her opponent 15-6, 15-8 and 16-3.

Lisa Harrison, the number-two player, saw little court time as she quickly finished off her opponent, Julie Peterson, 15-10, 15-8 and 15-13.

Laura Kaye, following Harrison's lead, dispatched of Lisa Hinchlisse in a similar 3-0 fashion in the number-three slot.

Number-four player Courtney Stimpson dusted off her opponent Linda Peterson with consistent shots and a series of devastating corners.

Summer Breezin'

Wendy Sonnabrand, Cunningham, and Betsy Howe then proceeded to breeze through their respective challengers in a succession of rapid 3-0 matches.

"Wellesley has a developing program which is getting stronger every year," Cunningham said after the match. The Wellesley squad is currently ranked eighth in the nation.

Yale Romatch

This Saturday the racquetwomen will face the Elis of Yale in what promises to be a good contest. Victorious in the Hows Cup two weeks ago, the Crimson fears a repeat of last year's performance when, after beating Yale at the Howe Cup, they dropped the match play contest.
