PROVIDENCE, R.I.--The number of minority applicants to Brown University increased by a record 25 per cent this year, reaching a total of 2000.

The admissions office attributed the increase to changes in the application forms and to recruitment tactics. Admission officers traveled this year to Puerto Rico. Texas and California to recruit minority students, Faye Frieson, associate director of admissions, said.

This was the first year Brown included a question on the application form asking for a specific ethnic identification, which increased the number of applicants counted as minorities, Frieson said.
