Big Green Outguns Princeton, 40-23

By From WIRE Services

PRINCETON, N. J.--Dartmouth quarterback Mike Caraviello threw for 196 yards and three touchdowns, and backup tailback Rich Weissman ran for 174 yards and two scores to lead the Big Green to a 43-20 win over Princeton here Saturday.

The win moved Dartmouth into a three way tie for the Ivy League title with Penn and Harvard, only the second such result in the league's history. All three teams finished with 5-2 league records.

No Trouble

Against Princeton, Dartmouth had little trouble building a 30-0 halftime lead. Starting tailback Sean Maher scored the first Big Green touchdown on a three-yard run early in the first quarter. Caraviello followed with a seven-yard touchdown pass to split end Jack Daly, Dartmouth's leading receiver, early in the second period.

And the Dartmouth QB went back to Daly, again in the second stanza, on a 53-yard scoring strike to give the Big Green a 21-0 lead.

Third Time Pays

Before the half was over, Caraviello had hit on his third TD pass, to tight end Dave Brown, and Dartmouth added a field goal for its 30-point halftime lead.

Princeton bounced back in the second half for 20 points, mostly on the passing of quarterback Brent Woods (28 of 42 for 304 yards and two TDs), but the Big Green added another 13 points to seal the victory and a share of the league title.

Dartmouth split its games with its co-titleholders. The Big Green fell to Penn, 21-0, in its season opener, but upset Harvard, 14-12, to hand the Crimson its first Ivy loss on October 16.
